How to Download and Back Up Messenger Conversations

Need to recover or back up an important Messenger chat — before switching phones, closing an account, or simply keeping a lasting record?

This step-by-step guide shows how to download your Facebook/Messenger archive, whether your messages are standard or end-to-end encrypted, then turn them into a book with MonLivreSMS.

Guide to download standard Messenger messages

If you have not enabled end-to-end encryption, these are standard messages. Here is how to do it directly from the Messenger app on your phone.

Open the Messenger app on your phone.

Tap the menu icon (the three horizontal lines at the top left), then tap the gear icon (Settings).

Scroll down and tap Accounts Center.

Click on Your information and permissions.

Click on Download your information.

Click on Download or transfer information.

Select the relevant Facebook profile. (This step may not appear on some accounts.)

Choose the option Specific types of information.

Select only Messages in the list, then click Next.

Click on Download to device.

Choose the Date range.

Important: select the JSON format and Low media quality for a faster download. Finally, click « Create file ».

Patience: you will receive your Facebook archive within 10 minutes to 24 hours. An email will be sent as soon as it is available. If you receive nothing, check Accounts Center — a Download button will appear there.

Guide to export Encrypted Messenger messages

If you use end-to-end encryption (secure messages), this process should ideally be done from a computer.

On a computer, open Messenger.com and click your profile picture in the bottom left corner.

Click on Privacy & safety.

Click on End-to-end encrypted chats.

Click on Secure storage.

Click on Download data from secure storage.

Click on Download file.

Enter your Facebook password for security reasons, and click Confirm.

Preparation may take a few minutes. Then click Download. Your ZIP file will be saved to your computer.

Final step: print your chat history in a book

Now that your Facebook archive is downloaded to your phone or computer (in .zip format), you can import it into our creator to generate a beautiful book.

The archive contains all your Messenger messages, but rest assured: our tool will let you select only the chat (with the person of your choice) you want to print.

Go to our creation platform. Create an account, and click the Messenger icon.

Click the Select a File button.

Select the ZIP file you just downloaded from Facebook. Do not unzip the file beforehand.

Select the desired chat from the list. It will be added to the « My conversations » section, ready to be printed.

How do I recover a lost or deleted Messenger conversation?

If Meta still holds the data, export your Facebook/Messenger archive — standard messages are often still there. For encrypted chats, use the export from Messenger.com. MonLivreSMS can then rebuild the thread from the file.

What is the difference between standard and encrypted Messenger messages?

Standard messages export from the mobile app via Meta Accounts Center (Facebook archive). End-to-end encrypted messages download from Messenger.com on a computer, through Privacy & secure storage.

Do I need to unzip the file before import?
