How to export and download your Messenger chats in 2026

Since December 2023, Facebook Messenger has offered two distinct types of chat: Classic Messages and Encrypted Messages (with end-to-end encryption enabled).
How do you know what kind of messages you have?
Case 1: You've never activated encryption
If you've never activated end-to-end encryption in your Messenger settings, your chats are classic messages only. In this case, use the "Classic Messages" tab below.
Case 2: You have activated encryption
If you have activated encryption for certain chats, you must download the two archives separately to recover your entire history:
→ Archive 1: Classic messages ("Classic messages" tab)
→ Archive 2: Encrypted messages ("Encrypted messages" tab)
Important: If you have activated encryption after having already started a chat, some of your messages may be found exclusively in the encrypted message archive, even if the chat was started before activation. It is therefore essential to download both archives to avoid losing anything.
Once both archives have been downloaded and imported into your MonLivreSMS account, you can merge the two chats to create a complete book with all your messages in a single chronology.
- To get started, open the Messenger application
- Click on Settings (the three dots at top left)
- Click on The Cogwheel
- Click on Account space
- Click on Your Information and Authorizations
- Click on Upload your information
- Click on Download or Transfer Information
- Select Facebook
- Choose some of your information
- Select only Messages at the bottom of the page
- Click on Next
- Click on Download to device
- Select the desired Period
- Select JSON format and low multimedia content quality for faster downloads
- You will receive your file within 10 minutes to 24 hours, and an email will be sent to you as soon as it is available.
- If, after a few hours or days, you still haven't received the download link, go directly to the data request page via this link: Retrieve my archive
- Then click on Download to retrieve your file
- Your file will be downloaded to your device
- Download the application Mon Livre SMS app from Google Play Store or Mon Livre SMS from the Apple App Store if you haven't already done so
- Open the application, log in, then click on the Instagram button
- Click on Select File (the button will appear at the end of the tutorial)
- Select File, then Open
- Select the downloaded file (example: instagram_pseudo_date.zip)
- Your file will be uploaded to the application, where you can select the desired chat. It will then be accessible in the My chats section.
- Once the chat has been added to your account, you will be able to merge it with an existing one, or start customizing your book straight away.
- On a computer, open Messenger.com
- Click on your profile photo in the corner
- Click on Privacy & Security
- Click on End-to-end encrypted discussions
- Click on Secure storage
- Click on Download data to secure storage
- Click on Download file
- Enter your Facebook password and click on Confirm
- Click on Download
- Preparing your file can take just a few minutes
- Your file will be downloaded to your computer in ZIP format.
- You can now click on "Select a file" to add it to your account.
- Place the .zip file without opening it. If the file opens automatically, zip the "messages" folder again before uploading it to the site.
- Once the chat has been added to your account, you will be able to merge it with an existing one, or start customizing your book straight away.
